Everton edged past Wolves 1-0 in the Carabao Cup third round on Wednesday night, but the real talking point was the performance of 20-year-old Tyler Dibling. The midfielder delivered a man-of-the-match display that suggests he may finally be ready to make a consistent impact at the club.
The game at Hill Dickinson Stadium was a tight affair against a much-changed Wolves side. Joao Virginia, the former Everton goalkeeper, produced several fine saves to keep the visitors in it, including a remarkable stop from Thierno Barry. It took until the 80th minute for the breakthrough, when substitute Charly Alcaraz curled home after receiving a clever pass from Dibling.
Dibling’s breakthrough moment
Dibling, signed from Southampton for an initial £35 million in the summer of 2025, has had a frustrating start to life on Merseyside. Limited to just six starts and around 513 minutes across all competitions last season, the England Under-21 international has often looked on the fringes this term too. His only prior outing this campaign came as a substitute in the previous round against Preston.
Against Wolves he started and stayed on for the full match. He led the way in dribbles attempted and completed, won his fair share of duels, and created two clear chances. One of those was a superb through ball that sent Brennan Johnson clear, only for Virginia to deny him. Moments later Dibling was back defending, making a vital recovery tackle to halt a Wolves counter.
Assistant manager Alan Irvine was quick to praise the youngster after the game. He noted that Dibling has looked more comfortable since returning from pre-season and described him as a quiet lad who has needed time to settle at a club with such high expectations. The performance earned him nearly 60 per cent of the fan vote for man of the match.
Momentum for a young squad
This result keeps Everton’s unbeaten start to the season intact after six matches. They sit ninth in the Premier League table and will now host Newcastle United in the fourth round later this month. With the squad stretched following a difficult summer transfer window, performances like Dibling’s offer genuine encouragement.
Manager David Moyes has a threadbare forward line, with only Barry as a recognised senior striker. The emergence of academy or recent signings who can contribute immediately is therefore vital. Dibling’s display showed the sort of directness and work rate that supporters have been waiting to see consistently.
The win also came with a touch of glamour, as UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham and his Canadian counterpart Mark Carney watched from the stands. For fans, though, the focus will remain on the pitch and whether this marks the start of a more prominent role for Dibling in the coming weeks.
